Training
Looking to get up to speed quickly with the Open source GIS Suite? Join us in Magendhiran Consultancy Services (www.mcsmapping.com) training facility, located in Gandhi Nagar, Kanchipuram. Our facility includes a fully-equipped classroom setting, plenty of space for instructor interaction with Open Source GIS experts (Resource Person). Or if you prefer, our experts can come to you: the full course catalog is available for on-site trainings at your facilities (Recent Workshops conducted).
Advantages of Open Source GIS
The growth of GIS is hindered by highly priced proprietary softwares and unavailability of public geodata. Many of such licensed softwares remain unutilized in various government offices because they require either extensive training or easy availability on multiple locations. All this can be changed by the use of Free/Opensource software GIS tools. This is significant since all government data and most educational institutions work in local language media. FOSS GIS or Free/Opensource Geospatial softwares are more powerful and usable for developing systems where more and more public participation is sought.

• Select feature by radius & Exporting, Overlay Analysis, Buffer Analysis, Attribute Joining and Attribute by spatial joining
• Calculation, Modeling, Exporting to new projection, Short cut keys assigning, Map preparation & Symbolisation.
• GRASS GIS – Importing Shp files, Topology building, Fixing errors, Exporting to OGR formats.
3. GPS Surveying
Attendees will learn about and GPS Surveying concepts with help of lab exercises
• Theory: GPS satellite principle, Kepler’s Laws, User segment, Control Segment, Space segment. Working principle of GPS and DGPS. Type & Accuracy of Instruments.
• Lab Exercise using Handheld GPS: Surveying way points, Tracking line, Creating polygon & Creating Elevation model
4. Introduction to Post GIS: Attendees will learn about and create spatial databases, load data from a variety of sources into a spatial database, and perform queries against the data. Basic SQL syntax will be covered. Familiarity with basic GIS concepts and using the command line is suggested.
Custom Training
For those who have unique training needs, MCS also provides custom training sessions with core developers of our open source projects. These sessions are geared towards advanced students who are looking for help to solve particular problems using the Open Source GIS Tools.
When scheduling a session please provide information on your current knowledge and skill set, what you would like to learn, and the problems you are trying to solve. This will help us select the best instructor. To ensure optimum learning, each session will be limited to one particular component of the Open Source GIS Tools—database, server, or client. During the session the student can ask the instructor to clarify GPS Survey concepts, GPR survey concepts, Remote Sensing concepts, Digital Image Processing concetps, LiDAR Classification concept and make performance suggestions give expert advice, and more.
As these sessions are geared towards advanced students, we recommend students are already familiar with the specific component of the GIS concepts. This means completing at least one of the Open Source GIS introductory courses or equivalent experience. Custom training sessions are geared towards individuals, although we can accommodate two or three students at a time as long as they are at the same level of knowledge.
